First program for haemodialysis care centres NEFROBASE was developed by ProDos programmers in 1988 and was installed in about 25% of centres in the Czech Republic. Due to the higher demands from the side of NEFROBASE users Czech Nephrological Society addressed ProDos to the development of new version of information system that would include relevant questions of dialysis centres with regards to modern computer equipment facilities. That was the inception of NEFRIS in 1993, nowadays being run in 80% of HDC in the Czech Republic. Last release of the well established nephrological information system NEFRIS is version 4. NEFRIS 4 is based on 32-bit Client-Server system. Its development focused on providing links between entered information items, possibility of close co-operation with Hospital Information Systems, and generation of statistical reports, such as the EDTA or national statistics.
Nephrological information system NEFRIS is a complex information system for dialysis centers covering complete patient health care documentation as well as all necessary administration. Flexibility of the NEFRIS system enables an easy configuration according to the user´s requirements both during its initial implementation and during its routine use. Documentation generated by NEFRIS corresponds to documentation standards required for accreditation according to ISO and/or other certification authorities. NEFRIS can also be easily incorporated in or interconnected with existing information systems due to its numerous communication interfaces (national standard of the Czech Ministry of Health, XML, HL7). Using the integrated functions, data can be exported into national or centre-chain registers and statistical applications (e.g. RDP, AIS, EuClid). Over the many years of cooperation with NEFRIS users, we have developed a number of expert submodules, e.g. for haemo- and peritoneal dialysis adequacy assessment, anaemia control, calculation of usual parameters and indices etc.
NEFRIS is now available in English and three more languages. Its localization it further languages can be done in cooperation with native speakers in a two months time.
